"Since starting my plumbing business, I’ve worked with three clients so far, and every project has been a learning experience," Nicholas said. "The job in Kwale was particularly exciting because it pushed me to apply everything I learned in a real-world setting."

At just 19 years old, Nicholas Mwamburi from Magodoroni in Kisauni Sub-county found himself at a crossroads. A bright young high school graduate from Hamisi High School, he completed his studies in 2015 with dreams of pursuing higher education. However, financial challenges quickly dimmed his hopes, leaving him uncertain about his future.

Life skills training

"After finishing high school, I couldn’t afford college fees, and I felt lost. I didn’t know what to do with my life," Nicholas recalled. "I ended up doing odd jobs in my neighborhood just to survive, but none of them felt fulfilling. I’ve always known I’m good with my hands and passionate about technical work, but I lacked direction and a platform to develop my skills."

Finding Hope Through Kwacha Afrika Amidst the uncertainty, Nicholas heard about Kwacha Afrika’s Imarisha Vijana Center through his church. The youth-focused organization supports young people in Kisauni by equipping them with life skills and vocational training. Intrigued by the possibilities, Nicholas decided to explore what the center had to offer.

"I visited the center and learned about their business skills training. I immediately signed up, hoping it would give me some clarity on how to create a better future for myself," he shared enthusiastically.

The business training at Kwacha Afrika proved to be a turning point. He learned essential entrepreneurial skills, such as managing finances, customer service, and building a sustainable small business. This training not only boosted his confidence but also sparked a new sense of purpose.

While still processing what he had learned from the business course, another life-changing opportunity came knocking. Kwacha Afrika offered him a spot in a free plumbing training program. Nicholas eagerly enrolled, recognizing the potential of acquiring a practical, in-demand trade skill.

"The plumbing training was a game changer for me," Nicholas shared with pride. "It was hands-on, and I quickly realized I had a natural talent for it. The instructors were supportive and knowledgeable, which made learning exciting."

After completing the plumbing course, Nicholas wasted no time putting his new skills to work. He launched a small plumbing business, offering services to his neighbors and community. His dedication and professionalism soon earned him clients, including one all the way from Ramisi in Kwale County, where he successfully fixed farm tap connections.

"Since starting my plumbing business, I’ve worked with three clients so far, and every project has been a learning experience," Nicholas said. "The job in Kwale was particularly exciting because it pushed me to apply everything I learned in a real-world setting."

Despite his early success, Nicholas is determined not to stop there. He dreams of joining a reputable plumbing company to gain more industry experience and refine his practical skills. His long-term goal is to expand his plumbing business into a thriving enterprise that serves clients beyond his local community.

"I see myself working with a professional plumbing company where I can learn more advanced skills," he explained. "One day, I want to run a plumbing business that offers top-notch services and creates job opportunities for other young people."

Beyond his personal ambitions, Nicholas is passionate about inspiring other young people to embrace technical skills and vocational training. He firmly believes that such skills can be a lifeline for youth facing tough economic conditions.

"Technical skills are a ticket to financial freedom," Nicholas stated with conviction. "They open doors to opportunities and keep young people from falling into dangerous habits like drug abuse, crime, and violence."

Through business and plumbing training, he discovered his potential, turned his life around, and now envisions a bright, opportunity-filled future.
