Meet Sarah D.

Her life was transformed Through her volunteer trip to KWacha Afrika

" In the summer of 2016, I volunteered with the amazing Kwacha Afrika team and had an unforgettable experience with its staff and volunteers. As someone who had never traveled to Kenya (let alone another continent), I didn’t fully know what to expect when I first touched down in Mombasa. By the end of my trip, I had made such wonderful connections with my peers and had an incredible time learning more about myself and the power of educating and advocating for your community.

One particular activity I remember vividly was having a dance competition in one of the local neighborhoods. The excitement and overall energy of the children and youth were so contagious that you couldn’t help but want to dance along with them. The volunteers were also amazing at keeping the crowd’s attention, and while I’m not fluent in Swahili by any means, I still felt that a deeper message was being conveyed when addressing the very serious issues the community was facing at the time.

All in all, I couldn’t be more grateful to have been blessed with such an incredible opportunity, and I will never forget the wonderful memories from my time volunteering with Kwacha Afrika."

Meet Laura

My journey with Kwacha Afrika began in 2011 when I visited Mombasa, Kenya, to collect data for my Master's research. I spent five memorable months learning alongside women who had recently been diagnosed as HIV-positive, exploring their experiences and conversations around health and wellbeing. From my first day, Kasena, Kwacha Afrika’s dedicated director, welcomed me into the community and arranged a homestay with Kai Kai and her family.

My experiences with Kwacha Afrika have deeply influenced my personal growth and professional path. The collaborations formed there have significantly shaped my career, guiding my continued exploration into community health and communication. It's lovely to still be able to return and do research alongside the people working at Kwacha, who lead out important community-level change work every day. Kwacha Afrika's commitment to nurturing meaningful community connections, fostering open intergenerational dialogue, and genuinely centering local voices make it an exceptional place for anyone passionate about community-driven change and social activism.
