Kwacha Afrika

< a Youth Run NGO in coastal Kenya>

WHO WE ARE

Our Peace, Security, Governance, and Access to Justice initiatives focus on creating safe, just, and accountable communities. Through civic education, leadership training, and community dialogue, Kwacha Afrika empowers youth to understand their rights, participate in governance, and contribute to peacebuilding efforts.

These programs inspire youth to become leaders who prioritize accountability, transparency, and security within their communities.

OUR JOURNEY

25+ yEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

Our story began in 2000 with a small group of passionate young volunteers in Mombasa who saw the power of storytelling to spark change. Using Participatory Educational Theatre (PET), we tackled critical issues such as reproductive health, adolescence, and HIV/AIDS, sparking awareness and dialogue in underserved communities.

While our approach has expanded, our mission remains rooted in collaboration, resilience, and creating sustainable change.

Today, Kwacha Afrika stands as a testament to the power of youth-led action and community-driven solutions, inspiring hope and fostering progress across Kenya’s coastal region.

Fostering Economic Opportunities

The name “Kwacha Afrika” means "Arise Afrika," a call to action for empowerment and resilience. It reflects our unwavering commitment to uplifting young people and inspiring them to take charge of their futures.

"Nurturing a movement of empowered youth to shape a brighter future."

Evans Kasena

Executive Director

With over a decade of experience in community development and youth empowerment, I am dedicated to fostering sustainable change and creating opportunities that transform lives across coastal Kenya. At Kwacha Afrika, I guide the strategic direction of our programs, ensuring we address the needs of the communities we serve while empowering youth to drive meaningful change.

Our work spans critical areas such as talent development, health advocacy, entrepreneurship, governance, peacebuilding, and environmental action—uplifting individuals and building resilient communities. One of my proudest achievements has been leading efforts to significantly increase youth participation in leadership and governance processes, enabling young people to influence positive change and advocate for their communities.

My journey with Kwacha Afrika has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. Collaborating with passionate individuals and organizations committed to social justice and youth development continues to inspire me every day. When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring Kenya’s rich cultural heritage, engaging in community theater, and mentoring emerging leaders.

At Kwacha Afrika, we’re not just running programs—we’re nurturing a movement of empowered youth ready to shape a brighter future.

Karen Kengah

M&E/Programs Officer &

Human Resource Lead

As a certified community development practitioner specializing in youth and gender issues, my work at Kwacha Afrika focuses on creating opportunities for the most vulnerable members of our communities, especially young women. Overseeing monitoring and evaluation, program coordination, and human resources, I help ensure our initiatives drive meaningful, measurable impact.

One of my proudest accomplishments has been establishing and strengthening young women’s movements in Magarini, where women face significant challenges such as marginalization and gender-based violence. Through these efforts, I’ve witnessed incredible resilience and growth in communities, a testament to the power of empowerment and collaboration. I’m also inspired by how Kwacha Afrika supports local artists to creatively address social issues and foster dialogue.

When I’m not working, I enjoy writing community-focused articles and exploring stories that highlight resilience and transformation. Being part of Kwacha Afrika allows me to contribute to a brighter future while working alongside a passionate and dedicated team.

With over five years of experience in communication for development, I specialize in crafting impactful campaigns, creating compelling content, and building meaningful relationships that amplify the voices of underserved communities. At Kwacha Afrika, I lead communication strategies that highlight our successes, inspire action, and connect people to the heart of our mission.

One of my proudest achievements has been launching a campaign that significantly increased youth participation in leadership and governance processes. Seeing young people step into roles where they can advocate for change and lead their communities inspires my work every day. My role also includes overseeing media outreach and using storytelling to showcase the transformative work Kwacha Afrika does.

I hold a diploma in Information and Communication Technology, with additional training in community engagement, digital media, and cybersecurity.
